#1 The discovery of I-shadow

Chapter 1: Another dreadful day
“Nerd! Freak!” Those are the words I hear every day of my school career at Elizabeth Grace Middle School. Hurtful words fill the air like kids fill the school. You would think one would find its place in such an over-populated school, but not me. I have two real friends. Their names are Kacy and Maggie, the best friends in the world. I used to have more friends in Middle School before the accident. Back then I didn’t dread looking in the mirror every day. I used to see a beautiful girl with curly blonde hair and Irish green eyes. Now all I see is the ugliest thing you can imagine, covered with scars on its face, glasses on its eyes, and braces in its buck teeth. Yep, that`s me, Brooke Michelle Sparks.
“Beep! Beep!” my alarm went waking me up to another dreadful Monday. “BROOK! ARE YOU UP?” My dad yelled from downstairs. I moaned back as I walked onto my closet and got dressed. Now, came the hard part. I opened my bathroom door slowly, and walked in. There stood in front of me was that ugly thing again. “Brooke? Are you here?” My friend Kacy walked in. “Please tell me you`re dressed” My other friend Maggie joked. “I’m in the bathroom.” I yelled. They walked in and stared at me. Finally Kacy asked, “Ready to go?” I turned around, and walked off.
“ Ring! Ring!” The lunch bell went off, and kids filled the hallway. “Hey Nerd, where`d you buy your clothes? Geeks R us?” A guy and his friends laughed as I walked down the hallway. “You mean Geeks R her” They burst into laughter. More insults came out of people’s mouths. I always hated walking to lunch. The more insults that came the faster I walked to the lunch room. Suddenly, I was falling. Down I went as my books flew out of my hand along with my glasses. “I’m so sorry!” I heard a girl’s voice say. Everything was blurry. Then I felt my glasses on the cold ground. When I put them on the world lit up. “Wow!”The girl said. I looked up to see one of the coolest girls at school, Auburn. She was wearing a pink shirt with Aero on it and a pink hair band in her auburn hair. “Your eyes!” She said with amazement in her eyes. “Go ahead make fun of my glasses” I said getting my books together. “No, they’re…” She paused. “The prettiest eyes I`ve ever seen!” “Thanks. I get them from my mom” I couldn’t believe Auburn was actually talking to me without insulting me. “You should seriously consider getting contacts. Your glasses totally hide your eyes.” Auburn said.. I got up and said, “Yeah, well I`d have to ask my dad.” “You know what would also look great? Some eye shadow. It always brings out the color of people’s eyes.” She said. “Auburn stop talking to the geek and get over her!” One of her friends said. She waved good bye and walked off.
Chapter 2: The discovery of makeup
That night I looked up on the computer to see what eye shadow even was, and started making my own. I also pulled up some searches of some things called lipstick, eyes liner, and mascara. Before I knew it I had a bunch of makeup. My dad had never bought any makeup for me since he really didn’t get the point, and he thought girls should look natural. I have been surrounded by boys all my life since my mom died a year after I was born. I had three older brothers in a dad. That’s a whole house of guys. After I was done with the makeup I had to ask my dad about contacts. I found the perfect time one Saturday morning. He was sitting down reading his news paper and drinking coffee. “Hey Brae-Brae.” He said as I walked into the room. “Umm hi Dad, can I talk to you?” He nodded and pulled out a chair. I sat down and said, “Well, you see there is a thing called contacts. It’s when you don’t have to wear glasses when you need them. You just put in these pieces of glasses instead. You can see perfectly, and glasses get so annoying. So, I was wondering…” My dad interrupted me. “Brooke, I don’t know about this.” “But Dad, come on! We can go into the eye doctor tomorrow and talk to them. Please!” I gave him a puppy dog face. “Fine, but I’m not agreeing will get them.” I squealed and hugged him.
The next day we went to the eye doctor. My dad and the doctor talked a long time as I sat there listening to my iPod. “Brooke come here.” My dad called me over. I did what he said. I did what he said. “I have talked this over with Doctor Isaiah, and I’ve decided we`ll get you some contacts. But, first we have to try some on.” A huge grin went on my face. “Okay, this is how you put them in” The doctor demonstrated as I mocked. “Great! You’re all set! Just remember to take them out at night. And by the way, you have beautiful eyes..” “Thanks!” I said as we walked out the door. Now, everything was set for my makeover. For once in my life I couldn’t wait to go to school tomorrow.
Chapter 3: The makeover
“Wow!” My brother Addison said as I came downstairs. My dad turned around. His mouth hung open so big you could land a plain in there. “Is that makeup?” My dad asked. “Yep, do you like?” I asked. “You know how I feel about makeup. Remember?” He put the milk back in the fridge. I got all tense. Was he going to make me take it off after all my hard work? I couldn’t have this happen. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. It was Maggie and Kacy. Addison let them in. “Hey …WOAH! What happened to you?!?” Kacy said in shockingly. “I got contacts, put makeup on, and curled my hair. Do you like?” I said spinning around. “No.” Kacy said automatically. “Ahem” My dad coughed. “Well, I think she looks really pretty.” Maggie said. “Whatever. Let`s go” Kacy walked out as I followed her.
“Look-in` good.” People said as I walked down the hallways. Everyone was giving me compliments on how good I look. I couldn’t wait to show Auburn that I had taken her advice. Finally I found her at her locker surrounded by friends. “Hi Auburn!” I said as I walked up. “Umm… do I know you?” She asked. “Well, sorta. We talked yesterday after I ran into you..” I said hoping she would remember. “Woah! I can’t even recognize you. You look amazing!” She said. “Thanks! Well, I just wanted to tell you I took your advice, By the way I’m Brooke. Well, bye!” I started to walk off when she said. “Wait! Do you want to go to the mall after school?” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. The coolest girl in school wants to hang out with me! I nodded. “Cool! Well I’ll see you after school!” She walked off..
After school I met Auburn and a couple of friends at the mall. “Hi!” I greeted her. “Hey! These are my friends Katie, Mackenzie, and Nafisa.” She pointed to three girls. “Now let`s shop till we drop!” Mackenzie said.
I got home at about eight o`clock with tons of new clothes Auburn bought for me. “Where have you been?” asked my dad. My three brothers [Addison, Drew, and Matt] were sitting there waiting for my answer. “I was at the mall with a couple of friends.” I replied. “There`s such thing as a phone” Matt said. “Oh no! I was so excited to go I forgot to call.. I’m sorry.” I said. “It`s okay, just don’t forget again!” My dad said. I nodded and walked up to my room.
Chapter 4: Auburn vs. Maggie and Kacy
The past week I spent more time with Auburn then I did with Maggie and Kacy. Auburn even let me sit with her at lunch. I could tell Maggie and Kacy were mad because they stopped calling me. “I have to ask. Where did you get that makeup? It looks amazing on you and really gives your face some pizzazz.” Auburn said biting into her bologna sandwich. “Ummm… actually I made it.” I said uncertain of what her and her friends would think. “Really?” asked her friend Nafisa. I nodded. “I have to try some!” Her other friend Katie said. “Me too!”, “Me too!” the whole lunch table was saying, except for the three guys. “You know what how bout` I make you some of your own?” I asked. “That would be great!” said Auburn.
That night I went home and made more and more. By the next week all the girls were asking for some. The only people that never asked for any were Maggie and Kacy. The week went faster than a race car speeding down Talladega Superspeedway, and for once in my life I actually enjoyed school.
My life was perfect, till I saw Maggie and Kacy at the Pizza Parlor at the mall on Saturday. “Hey, Auburn do you mind if I go talk to them?” I asked setting my burning hot pizza and ice cold drink down. She nodded and started digging in to her food. They didn’t notice me walk over and sit down, so finally I said, “Hi!” The ignored me. “I was just wondering if you wanted any of my makeup. It`s really amazing!” Then Kacy burst into fury. “NO! WE DON’T WANT ANY OF YOUR STUPID MAKEUP!!!!” Kacy had always been easy to aggravate, since her parents got a divorce. She even had to take anger management classes when she was eight. Now she just goes to the counselor once a week during third period. “Then what do you want?” I asked calmly. “We want our friend back.” Maggie said. Then Kacy got so frustrated you could see smoke come out of her head. “NOO! WE DON’T WANT ANYTHING, EXPIECIALLY NOT FROM YOU!!!” Now the whole Pizza Parlor was staring at us. “Actually we do want something from you.” Kacy said calmly. “What would that be?” I asked. “TO LEAVE US ALONE!!!” Maggie and her got up and left. My face stung from anger and sadness. I could feel tears run down my eyes like waterfalls. Good thing I was wearing my waterproof Mascara and eye-liner. Auburn came over and sat by me. “Are you okay?” She asked. A smile came upon my face as I nodded. I guess Auburn was a true friend who doesn’t bail on me.
Chapter 5: Channel 11 news
“This is channel eleven news at seven.” The TV said when I turned it on at seven. Auburn`s dad was an anchor on the show, and he had somehow got her on the TV that night. I was so excited to see her on TV! “Recently a student at Elizabeth Grace middle school got sick from eating the schools fish sandwich. Now we go to one Auburn Jackson another student at Elizabeth Grace middle to see how the food really is”, said one of the reporters as the scene flipped to Auburn sitting at a lunch table at school with a reporter. “Thanks Jenna! Now we have here Auburn Jackson a former student here at Elizabeth Grace middle.” Auburn smiled and waved.. “Auburn, what do you think of the food?” The reporter asked. “Well, I never fully liked the food. That`s why I always pack my lunch.” Auburn was still smiling like her picture was being taken. “Did you know the kid that got sick and did the school previously have problems with their food?” The reporter looked so professional sitting there in a blue skirt and blue button up jacket. “Actually I did know the kid. His name is Fillip Norman. He has had problems with his stomach before, so it may not of been the food`s fault. But, the school has had other kids without problems get sick. We recently signed a potation about it. Almost everyone voted to buy different school, but it cost too much so we didn’t.” “Thank you Auburn! And, I just have to ask where`d you get that makeup? It’s lovely!” Now the reporter didn’t look so professional. “Well actually a friend made it for me. Her name is Brooke Sparks. All the girls at school are wearing it.” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing! She`s complimenting on my makeup! “Really? Well it looks amazing! Well, now back to our anchors.” I went back to the main screen. The next couple of days everyone in town was asking for some! I started charging people, and putting out fliers of numbers to call if you wanted some. My makeup really was becoming a trend!
Chapter 6: I-shadow
By the end of the week I made over three hundred dollars, and my phone rang non-stop! Then one day when I answered the phone it wasn’t someone wanting to buy some makeup, but someone wanting to get me on Oprah! They told me Oprah was in town and wanted me on her show! I told my dad, and before I knew it I was behind the scenes of Oprah, minutes away of going on national TV!!! “Hey, Kid you’re up next so get ready.” A guy said. I nodded and looked through the curtain. Oprah was finishing talking about a man who got bitten by a shark two hundred times and lived. “Next we have a thirteen year old girl who made her own cosmetics. She`s only in seventh grade, and already making hundreds of dollars a week. That’s a lot more then you do babysitting.” The crowd laughed as Oprah continued. “Give it up for Brooke Sparks!!!” Everyone clapped as I walked out on stage. “Hello how are you Brooke?” “Good.” Oprah could tell I was nervous. We talked about how I used to not be the prettiest girl, and how I would`ve never guessed in a million years this would happen. We also talked about how it also helps your face. Then she asked me a question I never thought about. “So, what are your cosmetics called?” “Uhhh…” I never thought about that, so I thought quickly. “Eye shadow”, I said. The crowd laughed. “Isn’t eye shadow already a name of a type of makeup?” Oprah asked. “Well, actually it`s spelled with an I. That makes it unique like the girl who wears it.” Everyone clapped and Oprah said, “Thank you Brooke. You can buy I- Shadow by calling (770)456-1123 or e-mailing Brooke at Brae-Brae13@yahoo.com. Thank you and good night!” When I got home the phone was still ringing off the hook, and my e-mail was going crazy! I decided to make a website called www.I-shadow.com . My life was completely perfect, so I thought.
Chapter 7: Cancer comes back
Weeks rolled by faster than light, and money kept coming. My dad ended up quitting his job because of all the money we were making. Makeup stores started buying I- Shadow to put in their stores and sell. Everything was going great till I got a phone call one Thursday night. “Hello?” I answered my lime green fuzzy phone in my room. “Brooke?” a familiar voice asked. “Yes?” I asked. “This is Tina Peyton, Maggie`s mom.” “Oh hello Mrs. Tina!” I kindly greeted her. “ Ummm… Maggie is in the hospital. She`s not doin` too well. The doctors say her cancer`s come back.” I was so shocked I dropped the phone, and screamed. My dad came rushing in. “What is it? Wait, don’t tell me. I bet someone wants you on their show.” My mouth hung wide open as I shook my head no. “Get your car keys! We’re driving to the hospital.” My dad did what I said. In the car I explained to him what happened. My dad is like a little kid. If you tell the little kid something they always have to ask questions.
When we got to the hospital I rushed, ignoring the check-in desk. Some doctors chased after me, but I didn’t care. Finally, I found the room Maggie was in. “Maggie!!!” I cried. “SHHH!!!” Everyone shushed me. Then I saw she was sleeping. “Oh great, she`s here!” Kacy said walking out of the room. I knew I had to talk to her, so I followed her.
“I thought I told you to leave Maggie and I alone!” Kacy said the minute I walked out there. “You would come to the hospital too if I was dying.” I said. “That’s where you’re wrong! Since you made that makeup you think everyone loves you! I`m Brooke! I’m so cool!” Kacy started to mock me. “I don’t think everyone loves me!” I cried. “Whatever” That seems to be the last word Kacy usually said in fights. “At least I don’t hate the world.. I’m Kacy! The world stinks!” We were both crying our eyes out. That’s the first time I’ve ever seen Kacy cry. “I don’t hate the world, and I don’t hate you either. I just hate that you stopped being our friends.” More tears flowed down Kacy`s cheek. “I could never stop being your friend, or Maggie`s. You guys are the best friends in the world. Auburn may be a good friend, but she`ll never be Kacy Fisher and Maggie Peyton.” Kacy laughed for the first time I’ve seen her life in weeks. “Friends?” she asked. “Best friends”, I said giving her a hug.
Chapter 8: LAST CHAPTER!!!
I spent the whole time beside Maggie`s bed praying she would be okay. The next morning she woke up at about ten o`clock restlessly. “Brooke?” She said in confusion.. “Maggie! You’re awake!” I stood up. “What are you doing here? I thought you were mad at us.” “What a friend cant got to see another friend in the hospital even if they are mad? Plus, I was never mad. I thought you were mad at me.” She smiled. “I guess we were kinda mad.” She looked a little guilty. “But, that doesn’t matter now.. We`ve made up. And the important part that you’re not dead.” Kacy interrupted. I laughed, but Maggie just sighed. “Not yet at least. They still have to do surgery and a lot of other stuff.” Maggie said. “God won’t let you die. Not now. Let’s just forget about that and watch some TV.” Kacy turned the TV on to channel three. “Coming up, we have the girl who started I-Shadow on Totally Tiffany.” The TV said. Both Kacy and Maggie looked at me. “You skipped Totally Tiffany to be with me!” Maggie cried in gratefulness. “I would skip anything to be with you..” Suddenly, there was a knock at the door and a doctor came in. “Girls you’ll have to get out. Maggie has to do some tests.” He said. Kacy and I waved goodbye and left. It was true what I said. I would skip anything to be with Kacy and Maggie. I couldn’t ask for any other best friends, they’re the best friends in the world. Together or apart we`ll always be in each other’s heart. No makeup or Auburn can come between us. No matter if I have to sail the seven seas for them, or climb Mt. Everest, we`ll always be together. Forever and ever, till eternity we`ll be together. No matter what happens in the future, we`ll be best friends. And we always will.
